Arabic Belly Dancer
An Arabic Belly Dancer is not like other dancers who just appeals to the sexual arousal in the males. It is basically about mastering the moves of this dance and at the same time feeling comfortable and confident about your performance. If your are considering this as only an erotic dance then you are lacking knowledge about the other aspects of this dance.
Mastery at Basic Moves:
- Shimmy: The up-and-down quick movement of the hips is called shimmy. The belly dance posture should be proper.
The right knee should be slightly raised and the right hip should snap upward. Then lower the right knee with immediate raising of the left knee, and making he left hip snap upward. These steps constitute the shimmy.
The belly dancer has options either to shimmy on one side or both sides alternatively.
- Shoulder Shimmy: The shimmy of the shoulders is not about movement of the chest but about isolation and movement of the shoulders. The shoulders are rhythmically thrown back and down. The first step is slightly leaning forward, and then pulling anyone of the shoulder up and then down in front of you. The first step is repeated of the other side shoulder too.
- Hip Circle : One full rotation of the hips is called as hip circle. This movement of the hip should be controlled and fluid. The circular movement is formed by first taking a small step to right , then pushing out the right hip, moving back, leaning forward then pushing the left hip to continue the motion.
- Hip Twist: I a hip twist one of the hips moves towards the front of the body. In this movement the level of the hips remain the same, it neither goes up nor down. If your posture is proper this twist will cover a quarter of a revolution.
- Hip Slide: For this movement the dancer has to think that the hips are in a horizontal plane In this movement the hips move only from right to left and left to right but never up and down.
- The Chest slide and the head slide can be done the way hip slide is done.
- Undulation: The up undulation and the down undulation can be executed by alternatively tucking in and out the hips and stomach with the bringing in and out of the rib cage and chest.
- Arabic Walk: It is a common way to move individually or in a group while belly dancing.
- Snake Arms: This movement is with reference to the elegant motions of the arms.
The movements of the arms are such as to mimic a slithering snake.
